Challenge: Making Black Packaging Perform as Precisely as It Looks

For a Swiss premium cosmetics project, the packaging had to communicate restraint, precision, and durability from the first touch. The brief called for a full-black presentation box with a textured, fingerprint-resistant appearance that could support a clean, refined presentation through handling and display.

The surface also needed to resolve a demanding visual contrast: anti-scratch matte lamination, Spot-UV linework, and gold foil stamping had to work together without making the design feel crowded or inconsistent. Structurally, the magnetic flip-top box needed to present a square, upright silhouette, with strong closure feedback, smoothly wrapped edges, and controlled corner finishing. Inside, the black EVA insert had to protect the cosmetic product while preserving the disciplined black-and-gold visual language.

Engineering Solution: Layering Material, Finish, and Structure

The PackTonTon Engineering Team developed the box around a 1200g double-greyboard core covered with 157g double-coated paper. This combination provides a firm structural foundation for the magnetic flip-top format and supports a clean, upright presentation.

  1. The exterior uses anti-scratch matte lamination with a full-black textured, fingerprint-resistant appearance. This finish is treated as a quality objective: to reduce the visibility of fingerprints and handling marks while preserving a controlled tactile surface during retail presentation.
  2. To create a deliberate light-and-shadow hierarchy, the team aligned 4C printing with Spot-UV linework and gold foil stamping. The matte surface absorbs light, while the UV lines selectively reflect it. Gold foil introduces a warm metallic accent, creating visual depth against the restrained black ground. Color, foil coverage, UV placement, and edge appearance are controlled against approved reference samples before production.
  3. The interior uses a 30mm black EVA insert, composed of a 5mm bottom pad and a 25mm die-cut layer, with laser engraving for the approved cavity layout. This structure supports product retention and a clean presentation edge. The black insert and gold foil details create a refined, gold-accented reveal without unnecessary decoration.

Outcome: A Structured Brand Asset for Premium Presentation

The completed packaging system brings together surface control, material contrast, structural discipline, and product protection.

  • Display control: The full-black textured matte appearance supports a composed presentation during handling and display.
  • Sensory contrast: Spot-UV linework and gold foil establish a deliberate matte-to-gloss and cool-to-warm hierarchy.
  • Structural confidence: The magnetic flip-top format is designed to maintain a square, upright appearance with a clear closing response.
  • Product protection: The black EVA insert uses a 5mm bottom pad and 25mm formed layer for a composed, product-specific presentation.
  • Brand consistency: Color references, edge wrapping, corner finishing, magnetic alignment, and assembly repeatability remain central quality priorities.

Together, these elements turn a functional cosmetics box into a controlled luxury experience for the Swiss market.

Frequently Asked Questions

The anti-scratch matte surface is designed to reduce the visibility of fingerprints and handling marks while preserving a deep-black appearance. Final durability should be confirmed through an approved production sample and handling review.

They are prepared as separate finishing layers against the approved artwork. A pre-production proof should confirm line placement, foil coverage, contrast, and edge appearance before batch production.

The insert uses a 30mm black EVA structure consisting of a 5mm bottom pad and a 25mm die-cut layer. Laser engraving supports the approved cavity layout and helps limit movement. Final fit should be confirmed using product drawings or a physical sample.

Consistency is managed through approved master samples and documented references for color, matte texture, Spot-UV linework, gold foil placement, EVA cavity details, edge wrapping, and assembly. Each production batch should be reviewed against the approved reference before release.
